Props – I Heart Faces Photo Challenge

Props can add so much to your senior pictures!  Not only do they add meaning to your session and help display your personality, they often give you something to do during your session.  That’s important because you might not be super comfortable in front of the camera.  Totally normal!!  (Unless, of course, you are modeling as an after-school job.)  And so, bringing along a few important items helps us showcase who you are and also helps you feel more at ease during your portrait session.

For example, I recently had a photo session with Jonathan, the pitcher for Norton High School’s baseball team.  Now, Jonathan really was very relaxed for his session, but he lit up when I asked him about the scripture references on his ball glove.  He told me that his coach is a big proponent of positive thinking and that he had encouraged his team to write inspiring quotes under the bill of their ball caps.  Whenever the game wasn’t going their way or one of them made an error, his teammates were supposed to look at those sayings to strengthen their resolve to do their best.  Jonathan had lots of verses that encouraged him.  Too many to fit in just the space under his cap, so he started writing the references to his favorite verses all over his glove, too.  We felt that it was an important enough element to his story to include a photograph of the glove in his final album.

Megan – Green High School Class of 2015

Green, OH Outdoor Senior Pictures Session with Adrienne Zwart Photography

I’m so excited to finally share my daughter Megan’s senior photos with you.   She wanted to do her hair two different ways, so we split her session between two locations last fall.  The first day, she had her makeup professionally done by Kevenah at Connyx Salon & Spa, and then we headed down to Canton for some beautiful outdoor senior pictures.  (Green High School is wonderfully located between two cities.  There are so many great locations to choose from in either direction!)

Meet Eliza – Rittman Class of 2015

Class of 2015 Akron/Canton Ohio Senior Photography

Meet sunny Eliza from Rittman’s Class of 2015!

Eliza opted to wait until spring for her senior pictures.  I totally get that.  The fall is so busy with finishing up college visits, writing essays for scholarship applications and extra-curricular activities that squeezing in a photo session is difficult.  We had a lovely morning for outdoor portraits and then moved indoors to finish up.

Eliza, I hope you have a blast in college.  Your smile and sweet spirit are infectious, and I wish you much success in your future endeavors!

Newborn Baby Girl Asleep in a Crate - Akron, Ohio Newborn Photo Session by Adrienne Zwart Photography

And those dimples! I could have photographed her all day!

Her mom brought along the handmade baby afghan. (Just in case you might be thinking that I am crazy talented enough to crochet a custom blanket for each client.  I wish!)  I have lots of blankets, headbands, hats and props, but clients are always welcome to bring along a sentimental item to include in one of their photos.

Free Birth Announcement Templates for Photoshop

Free Baby Girl Birth Announcement Template from Adrienne Zwart PhotographyI love creating customized birth announcements for my clients!  Many of my clients come to their newborn session knowing that announcements are one of the products they  want to purchase.  So I like to offer them several options from clean and simple designs to current trends in stationery.  I have several design vendors from whom I purchase templates, but sometimes I want to create something from scratch.

Here’s a simple design I made for a recent newborn baby girl client.  And since I liked how it turned out, I decided to make a boy option as well and save it in my collection of birth announcement templates for Photoshop.  I’m sharing this template today along with a list of other free birth announcement templates over at I Heart Faces.

Free Birth Announcement Templates for Photoshop

These are fairly simple to use.  You just click on the layer where you want to add your photo.  It should clip to the framed area by default, but if it doesn’t, simply hit Ctrl+Alt+G to fit the image into the mask.

To use the blue background, simply turn on the blue background layer by clicking the empty box for the eye icon in the layers palette (See diagram below). You can turn off the pink layer if you want to, but it will be hidden by the blue one anyway, so I don’t usually bother.

The lines of text are on separate layers so that you can change the color and style to fit your needs.  (I thought white text looked better on the blue background.)  I just used a font I already had, but you can find lots of fonts that fit your style at daFont.com.

When you have all your photos and text in place, flatten your image and save as a jpeg file to send to your print lab.

Once you have gotten comfortable with layer masks, you are going to want to make some templates for yourself.  My favorite source for background papers is Tactile Studios.  The two papers above are from the Blush and Felicity paper packs.  She has amazing sales often, so sign up for her newsletter to take advantage of those and stock up.

I hope you will find these templates a useful addition to your newborn photography business products.
