Clothing Inspiration Guide for photo sessions from Adrienne Zwart Photography

Congratulations!  You’ve booked your appointment, but now you are wondering what everyone should wear so you all look great.

Well, have no fear–I am happy to help you put together your family’s wardrobe so that you don’t have to resort to everyone wearing blue jeans and white shirts.  (After all, you probably don’t all step out wearing matching clothes every day, right?)

Start with an inspiration piece.

Maybe you have a dress that makes you feel fantastic.  Or a certain pair of jeans and a top.  Whatever it is, take a good look at the colors.  Find something from your daughter’s closet that has a similar style and/or color.  Then work on Dad’s outfit.  Perhaps a shirt or sweater in a complimentary color.  It doesn’t really matter whose outfit you start with, just pick one and then begin laying out other pieces next to it until you like the combination.  Maybe you love this season’s hot color on the fashion runway, but you need help figuring out what other colors to pair with it.  Good news! I have created a color pallette inspiration board on Pinterest to help you figure out what color combinations work best.

Think about where you will display the artwork.

Do you want your portraits to hang in a certain room?  Do you have a neutral, soft or bold decorating style?  Do you prefer to print an album for the coffee table?  Answering these questions can help point you toward a color scheme for your outfits.

Make it comfortable.

Unless they frequently get “dressed up,” most kids do not enjoy the stiff feeling of dressy clothes.  So, yes, think about something stylish if that’s you, but keep it comfortable!  Because here’s the thing:  if  your kids are comfortable, they are more likely to enjoy themselves, and you will see it in your photos.    The more comfortable your kids feel (husbands, too!), the better chance we have of capturing the essence of your family.
